Professional basketball player Tim Duncan is suing his financial advisor for losing $25M dollars. What went wrong? What's the lesson for all of us? We'll dig in today!

Deacon Hayes from The Well Kept Wallet joins the fun today, discussing commuting costs, illegal money habits and more with Paula Pant (Afford Anything) and Joe. We also take your letters, including one about the popular app Acorns, another on our "pay off your mortage sooner" strategy, and a third questioning the number of times Joe says OG's name during the show.

Additionally, Shannon McLay from Martinis and Your Money may or may not join us this episode. We can neither confirm nor deny that she'll be on the show.....

Does that sound like a circus? It's just another Monday here at Stacking Benjamins!

It's difficult to imagine an episode more fun than this one with Joan Sotkin. She talks about a horrible time when she didn't understand money, got into a ton of debt, and had to go through bankruptcy.

I'm sure you're wondering, "What's fun about that?"

Joan is an eternal optimist and found a way to claw back and succeed. Not only has she had a successful career, but she's been able to explore the true meaning of money in a person's life. We discuss her failures, her successes, and how people are able to find a way to win against all odds on today's podcast.

We try to stump the amazing Farnoosh Torabi of So Money podcast fame with your letters....but she's too amazing and answers FOUR of them with little help from us. Should you start a house flipping business with friends? What assumptions should you make in a financial plan? How do you fast forward podcasts? We also talk about the MOST SHOCKING way to get rich....you'll have to hear it to believe it....AND PK tackles the most expensive years you'll have during your lifetime.

Another presidential candidate and ANOTHER financial idea....lump sum social security. We run this idea (announced recently by Mike Huckabee) by our roundtable panel of Paula Pant, Greg McFarlane, and special guest Linda P. Jones from the Be Wealthy and Smart podcast.

In our headline segment, it turns out Alex is being voted off the $10 island and Joe doesn't know his US presidents.

...and finally, our friend Matt Giovanisci from the brand new Driven podcast stops by to review the film Drive with Ryan Gosling.

Peter Polson had been using a ledger since his dad gave him a family allowance, but lately, whenhe searched for budgeting tools, he couldn't find one as robust as Microsoft Money or Quicken. That's why he joined forces with Tim Johns and created Tiller, an application that uses Google sheets to help individuals and families track expenses and plan their budget. Now you can collaborate, discuss and all edit your budget from wherever you are....even if you're in different cities, states or countries.

We discuss the ideal family meeting and the importance of having flexible tools. Then we tackle using the cloud to collaborate on your budget and different uses for this type of technology. Also we talk about the difference between Tiller and current budgeting tools on the market. How is Tiller different? I was surprised by the answer and think you will also.

We're excited that Peter and Tim decided to use today's episode as the launch of their open beta for Tiller. Use Tillerhq.com/StackingBenjamins to gain access to Tiller and start trying out the new budgeting tool!

As an extra bonus, we track down Jason Vitug from Phroogal.com again to see how his 30 day journey is going. If you remember, he and the Phroogal team are driving the length and width of the USA to talk financial wellness with people like YOU. It's an exciting story, so we wanted to see how it was going....and also to see if Jason's back on the fast food wagon on this whirlwind trip....calories don't count on road trips, do they?

How do we ensure that the huge banking and housing mistakes people made leading up to the 2007 crisis don't happen again? We're thrilled former FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair joins today us in the basement to discuss some of the tragic events from those years. We tackle predatory and crazy lending practices, the initial TARP meeting and many thoughts on how to prevent similar problems in the future. All of this is in her new book, The Bullies of Wall Street. While Sheila initially wrote the book for high school and college-aged kids, anyone interested in the crisis and the important role of both Sheila and the FDIC during that time will find it a fascinating tale.

As if that isn't enough, the one-and-only Josh Dorkin, founder of the awesome real estate community BiggerPockets (and host of the BiggerPockets podcast) sits in the co-pilot seat this week while OG is away. We discuss landscaping, job searches, diversifying your portfolio and more!

We're all about student loans and politicians with money issues....sound fun? You have no idea. Joe's Mom's neighbor Doug sits in for OG this week, which means it's an especially wild ride....but Linda P. Jones from Be Wealthy and Smart joins Greg and Paula on the roundtable to even things out.

Why are Americans buying so many cars? We ask (and attempt to answer) that question....and speaking of question, we wonder why someone would ever take a 65 month car loan!  We also wonder about the future of robe-advisors and more.

Tai and Talaat McNeely's relationship was rocky in the beginning. Hiding money problems, lots of debt, trying to "secretly get it taken care of"..... It was ugly.

The great news is that were they able to overcome those early obstacles, but they also now have a successful coaching practice, podcast and video channel. They work together as a team and it's exciting to watch.

What methods did they use to solve their communication issues? How did they get out of so much debt? Today how do they keep track of expenses and goals? We'll answer all those questions and more on today's show!

As an extra bonus, this week we track down Jason Vitug from Phroogal.com during his 30 day journey around the USA to talk money with everyday people. It's an exciting story, so we wanted to see how it was going....and also just how many doughnuts Jason's had so far....

Phillip Buchanon was already $1M in debt when he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the first round of the 2002 NFL draft. His family and friends used him for money. "Mentors" helped themselves as much as they helped him....but Phillip learned how to turn it around and now is an entrepreneur with many diversified projects including novels, comic books, board games and a film. He's written a new book called New Money: Staying Wealthy that details his struggle and tips for anyone in his shoes. It's a must-read for anyone who thinks that having a huge NFL contract will solve all of your headaches.

Suzanne Lucas joins in the fun....with tips for managers who want to keep top workers. We also take a question from two listeners....one with a question about whether to rollover a 401k and the other with a question about bonds.

In the headlines, we discuss what to do when you get raises or have big career news....maybe not what you'd hoped to do....AND news about financial advisors using ETFs differently than consumers.

We also talk about our favorite football movies and more.

Ah, marijuana....maybe the most asked question: "Is this an investment opportunity?" Christian Hageseth is on the front lines. He's the founder of Green Man Cannabis, the maker of award winning blends. Green Man started off working in the medical marijuana arena and when it moved to being legal in Colorado, expanded. He'll describe how he started, the history of the business, his experience, and whether it's a worthwhile business or investment for your portfolio.

PK joins us also to tackle a sexy topic.....the dad bod. Lots of people talking about this online; what's PK's take? And better yet, what's the financial allegory? If you know PK, you know there'll be one.

Joe & OG discuss ANOTHER Waco, Texas area scammer. They also answer questions from Carissa about how low interest rates are and keeping an emergency fund. It sucks! Then past guest Jeremy answers a question about Quotacy availability in New York.  Have a question of your own? Email us!
